Is there a target deep sleep percentage?
Not one that survives contact with the data. The joint recommendation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society is framed as the amount of sleep an adult needs, not as a stage-by-stage breakdown (Watson et al., 2015). Nothing equivalent exists for N3. If you've gone looking for the percentage you're supposed to hit, that's why you didn't find it.
Part of the reason is that the share moves too much with age to anchor a target. In 149 healthy men aged 16 to 83, mean deep slow wave sleep fell from 18.9 percent of sleep in early adulthood (ages 16 to 25) to 3.4 percent by midlife (ages 36 to 50), replaced by lighter stage 1 and stage 2 sleep rather than by fragmentation (Van Cauter et al., 2000). The nights didn't break apart. They flattened out. Those figures come from men only, so read them as a chronology rather than as a universal table.
That chronology is the reason a raw percentage travels so badly between people. A 22 year old and a 45 year old reporting the same 8 percent N3 aren't in remotely the same position. What happens when deep sleep goes missing
Deep sleep isn't just a deeper version of rest, and not enough deep sleep isn't the same thing as a shorter night. When slow wave sleep was selectively suppressed across a whole night in young healthy adults, with total sleep time held unchanged, insulin sensitivity fell markedly without a compensating rise in insulin release (Tasali et al., 2008). The size of the drop tracked the size of the reduction in slow wave sleep. And because total time asleep was held constant, the effect belonged to the stage rather than to the duration.
The long-run evidence points at change rather than at a single low value. In 346 Framingham Heart Study participants aged 60 to 87 who completed two overnight sleep studies a mean of 5.2 years apart, slow wave sleep percentage fell by an average of 0.6 percent per year. Over 17 years of follow-up there were 52 cases of dementia, and each percentage point of annual decline in slow wave sleep was associated with a 27 percent higher risk of incident dementia (hazard ratio 1.27, 95 percent CI 1.06 to 1.54) in adjusted models (Himali et al., 2023).
Notice what was measured. Not a threshold, but the rate of change in a person's own slow wave sleep, in adults already over 60. That association exists only because each participant had an earlier measurement of themselves to compare against. Low deep sleep isn't a figure you read off one night. It's a direction, and a direction needs a history.
Why last night's percentage is the wrong number to read
If your own deep sleep figure has ever swung hard from one night to the next with nothing obvious to blame, there's a number for that.
Among 49 community-dwelling older adults with a median age of 75.3, each recording eight nights at home on a wireless EEG headband, night-to-night variability in N3 percentage was high across 302 nights: a coefficient of variation of 47 percent, against 22 percent for REM percentage and 3 to 17 percent for N2 percentage and relative spectral power (Qin et al., 2026). Relative slow wave activity, not N3 percentage, was the measure that held steady inside a person.
A smaller study looks like it says the opposite, and the two are worth holding side by side. In 15 healthy adults recorded over four nights, N3 percentage showed moderate to good test-retest reliability (Suzuki et al., 2025). They aren't measuring the same quantity. Test-retest reliability asks whether people hold their rank order relative to each other, and that can stay high while every individual value swings. A coefficient of variation asks how far your own nights sit from your own average. That's the one you read against.
So your deep sleep share is plausibly a stable ranking and an unstable reading at the same time, and the larger, more recent sample is the one describing what lands in your report. That doesn't remove the case for a personal band. It sets the price of one: noise falls with the square root of the number of nights, so a band built from three nights is mostly noise, and halving its spread takes four times as many. That's the logic HaloScore uses, reading your sleep against your own accumulated band rather than a population figure.
What to watch instead of the percentage
Total sleep duration comes first, because N3 is a share of it and a shorter night changes the arithmetic before it changes the physiology. After that, watch your own band across several weeks rather than last night's figure, and watch the direction it moves over months, which is what the long-run evidence tracked. Reading a single number as a verdict is the failure mode described in when the numbers talk back.
Deep sleep is the number people screenshot. If you track your sleep, you've almost certainly compared that one figure against someone else's, or against your own from a week when you slept well. It's the line in the report that feels like a grade. It's also one of the least stable numbers in the report. That combination is worth sitting with: the most compared figure in sleep tracking is the one that says least about any single night. It doesn't say nothing. It just says it slowly, as a band you read across weeks rather than a figure you read at breakfast.
